Magellan Junior Content Specialist
We are looking for an individual to own the data entry and quality control of profiles on our insurance technology vendor database, Magellan.
This is a role that starts in the detail and has a huge opportunity for growth.
Initially your role will be to get your arms around the content already on the site. We have profiles for over 4,000 insurance technology vendors already on Magellan, and dozens of data fields for each of them. This makes Magellan one of the richest repositories of insurance technology vendor data in the world. Your job will be to understand the data that we have – its quality, utility and gaps, for example. You will need to understand how it is stored in our back-end system (Contentful) and how it is rendered in our UI.
Once you have got to grips with this, we expect your time to split between:
- Content management (c.30%)
- Search optimisation and curated search (c.40%)
- Vendor relationship management (c.30%)
You will be responsible for developing and maintaining a cadence of quality control checks and run periodic enhancement exercises. Your role will be to design and oversee this, with our outsourced data processing team (currently 8 individuals) doing the “heavy lifting”. You will need to have a focus on process management, an analytical mind, and obsession with building the most valuable data set in the market.
You will also need to work closely with two other parties:
- The product team – the team that develops the Magellan platform. This is a two-way relationship: you will be proposing to them how your data can be deployed more effectively in the user interface, and they might request that you provision new data to enable a new feature.
- The consulting team i.e. Oxbow Partners – the team that runs consulting products for our insurance clients and who have deep knowledge of the insurance technology landscape. This relationship involves ensuring that the data and insights you are putting in Magellan deliver value to users.
Search optimisation and Curated Search
You will be responsible for continuously enhancing the search algorithm that powers Magellan’s search interfaces. This will require you to identify common searches and understand how well the algorithm is performing. Your analysis will be a combination of your own insight and working with technology experts at Oxbow Partners. You will then need to work with the product team to improve the algorithm, both by making your own proposals about how to improve it and by co-creating solutions with the tech team based on target outcomes you have identified.
You will also be responsible for running Curated Searches. In the development phase, Magellan’s revenue model is to offer bespoke, offline searches to clients. This allows us to use the data in Magellan, learn what our clients need, but does not require the user interface to be fully mature. You will be responsible for running these occasional projects, which we intend to phase out as the technology matures.
Vendor relationship management
You will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key vendors on Magellan. This is for two reasons: a) to build their interest in the product and help with its promotion; and b) to obtain the best data from them through a strong relationship. We expect you to have as many meetings (face-to-face and virtual) with vendors as possible to achieve this.
The candidate will be a highly motivated individual who sees this role as an opportunity to accelerate their career. You’ll have the intellect and analytical skills to get to grips with the data quickly and get up to speed on the insurance industry context. You will relish the opportunity to grow with the role and see in what areas you can add value. You will be excited about making Magellan successful and building a team around you.
Candidates will demonstrate a range of the following attributes:
Career and track record:
- Experience of data and content management with a data business of some kind
- Experience of working with some data management software packages, although knowledge of database query language e.g. SQL is not necessary
- Experience of seeing projects delivered end-to-end from idea generation stage through to implementation and iteration
- Evidence of determination and success in various areas (e.g. career, academic, sport, music)
- Attention to detail
- Motivation and drive
Location and salary
The Oxbow Partners office is in London and we think community is important in a company. We would therefore expect you to spend at least a day a week in the office, although we are flexible about when this is or how you do it. For exceptional candidates we will consider more remote working.
The salary will be between £30,000 and £40,000 p.a. depending on experience, with a full range of benefits.
Magellan, the Magellan team and relationship to Oxbow Partners
Our vision is to make Magellan the go-to portal for information about the insurance technology vendor landscape. The idea builds upon insight we have gained through our technology consulting activity in the insurance market. Version 2 of the platform is currently being implemented by our outsourced technology team in Ukraine, and we expect a stable, market-ready version to be live by January. We have received many signals from both our insurance clients and technology vendors that we are filling an important gap.
We are currently restructuring the Magellan team. You would be working in a small team alongside a subject matter expert, who is the “public face” of Magellan and is the business owner of Magellan, responsible for advising on the direction of the UI Growth.
Magellan is a product built and managed by Oxbow Partners. Oxbow Partners is a management consulting business specialising in the insurance industry. In both 2021 and 2022 we were named as one of the top 10 consultancies in our sector by a Financial Times study. The blog on our website, oxbowpartners.com, already attracts thousands of readers of our content every month. We hope to convert technology-oriented readers to be Magellan users.
Our values and culture
Our mission is to be the most trusted, best informed, and most entrepreneurial insurance advisory firm in Europe and have more fun delivering than any of our competitors.
Magellan is integral to this mission as it delivers us unparalleled insight.
Our values guide everything we do and the way we behave at Oxbow Partners:
- Strive to be the best, but humble enough to recognise there’s always much to learn
- Be hard on facts, even when it means giving tough messages…
- …but soft on people
- Imperfect impact trumps perfect analysis
- Build the brand, and the business will build itself
We work hard but work-life balance is important to us.
In Q4 2022 we expect to receive accreditation as a B Corporation. B Corp is an accreditation for companies that balance purpose and profit. B Corp companies are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community and the environment. With that in mind, we’re seeking people who are passionate about their communities, the environment and caring for our clients and fellow employees. Oxbow Partners will strive to deliver a high-quality working environment including reward, recognition and career development, in an environment of mutual respect where creativity and ideas are encouraged.
The insurance industry
Insurance is going through profound change. Climate change is causing more frequent and more severe natural catastrophes. Cybercrime is accelerating and still a poorly understood risk. Insurers are central to helping individuals and companies get back on their feet after such events.
Insurance is hugely complicated. Companies need to employ everything from meteorologists to data scientists to marketeers, technologists and more. Insurers need management consultants to help them navigate this complexity.
This change is also placing huge demands on insurers’ technology platforms – much of which is ‘legacy’. There are huge opportunities for Oxbow Partners to support clients both with consulting services and Magellan.
